Cefpodoxime is the orally active ester prodrug of 3rd generation cephalosporin. It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms with notable exceptions including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus, and Bacteroides fragilis. It is typically used to treat acute otitis media, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and gonorrhoea. In addition to being highly active against Enterobacteriaceae and streptococci, it inhibits Staph. aureus. It is used mainly for respiratory, urinary, skin and soft tissue infections. Cefpodoxime inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls. t has an oral bioavailability of approximately 50%, which is increased when taken with food. It has an elimination half-life of 2-3 hours in adults
Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which reduces resistance and enhances the activity of Cefpodoxime Proxetil against bacteria.
